The Disability Right Advocacy Center (DRAC) on Friday, December 13, organised a training for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja disability community.

Legit.ng gathered that the initiative is geared towards improving the knowledge of persons with disabilities in the FCT on the provisions of the Violence against Persons (Prohibition) {VAPP} Act, 2015.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of DRAC, Irene Patrick-Ogbogu, said, ?We want to see a disability community that is more vibrant, more sensitive and more aware of their rights, so that we can continue to seek justice whenever their rights are violated. So that people will begin to see a disability community that know their right and would not tolerate any form of violence against them.

?Our women suffer a lot of violence because of their gender and their disability. Children with disabilities are also going through a lot of violence and all of it is unreported and unnoticed.

?When the opportunity arose for us to train our people on how to access justice. We also looked at what instruments are available to help them understand that the VAPP act is one of those very important legal instruments that many of us may have heard about or not heard about and we thought that the document is important for our people to know and how to use it to seek justice.?

On her part, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Barrister Julie Okah-Donli, called for strategic interface between organisations and stakeholders that deal with disability issues.

Okah-Donli who was represented by the head of reforms unit in the agency, Obi Agusiobo, said, ?there should also be conscious efforts to reach out to those other people that are not as privileged as those of us here.?

One of the reforms she brought in when she assumed office is the creation of a disability desk.

Agubioso further said: ?We have been doing a lot since the enactment of VAPPA. One of the reforms she brought in when she assumed office is the creation of a disability desk.

?But we are all aware that the Nigeria Police also play a very key role in administering the provisions of this act.

?But we cannot do much if these cases are not reported. So many forms of violence are going on different places, we wouldn?t know unless somebody places a call or someone confides in someone.?

Highlight of the event was the launching of the inclusive, citizen's version of the VAPP Act.

DRAC recently frowned at the rising rate of Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) in Nigeria.

The centre made its stance known during a rally it organised for sexual and gender-based violence awareness at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Thursday, November 29.

DRAC which partnered with other organisation for the rally, expressed their concern over the increase in such vices and the low rate of prosecutions and convictions of perpetrators of the offences.
