44 killed, 26 injured, N541m properties destroyed in Kogi crisis - Commission

The chairman of the judicial commission of inquiry into civil violence in the three communities, Justice Josiah Mejabi, made the revelation in Lokoja, Kogi state while briefing Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello on the development.

It was bad a moment in Kogi state as not fewer that 44 persons were killed and 26 different people were severely injured during a communal clashes in three local government areas of the state.

Tribune newspaper earlier reports that the chairman of the judicial commission of inquiry into civil violence in the three communities, Justice Josiah Mejabi, made the revelation in Lokoja, Kogi state while briefing Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello on the development.

NAIJ.com gathers that apart from the human casualty, properties worth N541.3 million were lost to the crises that took place in Omala, Bassa and Dekina local government areas.

Justice Majebi also revealed that during the commission's finding, about 115 persons were discovered as  masterminds of the violence that lasted for several months.

According to him, the crisis in Ogane-Nigwu, Iyade, Ojuwo Ajimadi, Agbenema-Ife and Agabifor in Dekina and Omala local government areas were between the Fulani herdsmen and the farmers.

He advised the governor of the state to provide relief materials to the victims of the unfortunate incidents.

Governor Bello, while accepting the reports, commended the commission. He also vowed to hunt those who instigated the attacks, adding that they will be made to face to wrath of law.

He said: "We will hunt you down, we will come after you, you may be able to run but you cannot hide, we will smoke you out. We won?t play politics with the lives of the people.?

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had declared a ?national disaster? in Kogi, Anambra, Delta and Niger, following high levels of flooding in the states.

Mustapha Maihaja, NEMA director-general, made the declaration during an assessment visit to River Niger on Monday, September 17, in Lokoja.

Maihaja said that eight other states were also on NEMA?s watch list. He explained that the states were experiencing high levels of flooding as a result of heavy rainfall experienced in some parts of the country.
