2019: Support a credible process - US, UK, EU, Germany, other diplomatic missions tell Nigerian political parties on Democracy Day

The federal government has received a message of felicitation from diplomatic missions in Abuja, on the occasion of the 2018 Democracy Day. The missions also urged political parties to support a credible process in 2019.

- Foreign missions in the country have sent a Democracy Day message to the federal government

- They congratulated Nigeria on its progress since 1999, including the first peaceful transition of power from a ruling party to an opposition party in 2015

- They also urged all political parties to maintain Nigerian and international norms, and support a credible process in 2019

The federal government has received a message of felicitation from diplomatic missions in Abuja, on the occasion of the 2018 Democracy Day, Daily Trust reports.

The missions conveyed their message in a joint statement which was signed by the European Union, Germany, France, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.

NAIJ.com gathers that they congratulated Nigeria on its progress since 1999, including the first peaceful transition of power from a ruling party to an opposition party in 2015. 

The missions however urged political parties in the country to support a credible process as the 2019 general elections approach.

The statement read in part: "In Nigeria, as in so many of our countries, the right for all citizens to enjoy equal participation in the democratic process was achieved after considerable struggle and suffering. 

?We remember and celebrate all those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.

?We take advantage of this national celebration of democracy to urge all political parties to maintain Nigerian and international norms and support a credible process.

?It is the fundamental right of the Nigerian people to freely express their will now and in the forthcoming elections.?

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 7am, made a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians in commemoration of Democracy Day.

In his third Democracy Day address to Nigerians, President Buhari listed the achievements of his government, and his administration?s plans going forward.

The president said his administration came at a time that Nigerians needed change, and that it will continue to deliver change.
